The home building and home design market is constantly changing. 3D projected renderings of client’s homes are becoming more common but not yet a standard. My question is why? Every industry has been affected by the changes in technology. Shouldn’t your custom home be digital as well? So long the days of hand drawings and hours spent tracing cabinets, to recreate the perfect kitchen, only to have your client say, “I don’t really know if I like crown molding?”. In a matter of seconds, cabinets, wall coverings, and tile can be changed through 3D renderings on chief architect software. Our business has cut the selection time in half by having 3D images created of virtually every room in a home. Having your client virtually walk through their finished home helps ease the selection process. Not to mention, every client wants a visual representation of what their dream home will look like in the end. 

Your family is just weeks away from being home for the holidays! How do you manage the juggling of Christmas decorations, suitcase explosions and holiday cooking? First, we start with a breathing exercise, take a deep breath in hold it, and exhale… At this point in December if your tree isn’t already up, let’s start with that first. Where should your tree’s location be this year? Are you wanting to mix it up and put your tree in the family library or maybe the dining room? There’s no written rule that your tree must take space in the prime traffic location of your household.  In fact, I like to keep my tree in the dining room or front entry of my home. It makes things more intimate when everyone starts opening presents.

Suitcase explosions happen whenever my sister is in town. I’m sorry, I know she’s going to kill me for saying this, but it’s the truth. There’s no way around her clothing vortex. However, when I have friend’s and other family around my home for the holidays, I try to keep her cardigan and jean collection contained so I can show my home to guests. I grab my suitcase rack and shove it in my closet for her to keep her clothing contained in one area. I recommend getting a suitcase rack for every guest room, so your guests don’t throw their suitcases on your bedding or benches (Fabric stain saver!).

​Holiday Cooking is one of the biggest challenges for me. Is our family doing a healthy Christmas this year, is Jessica still vegan, what do I bring? If you’re not the head chef this Christmas, make sure you call a few weeks ahead and ask what sides, desserts, appetizers or drinks are still needed. Most Christmas hosts will insist you bring nothing. Insist on bringing a dish, everyone knows not to show up to anyone’s home empty-handed. Pottery barn and west elm both have the best holiday serving dishes! I personally just like simple wood plank cutting boards and dressing it up by adding fresh pine tree bristles or cranberries as decoration. 
As hectic as the Holiday season can be, let’s remember what it’s all about. Spending quality time with your family and spreading love and joy to those in need.

​Everyone wants their home to be both aesthetically pleasing while also feeling comfortable and cozy. Here are some small touches you can make to your home that will transform your beautiful space. We used these simple cotton branches and sea foam colored glass beads to add soft elegance to this antique wooden tray. Family rooms tend to be utilized as the comfy space of the home. At JP Malone we agree, the family room should be your space of gathering. The spot in the home where your family can put their feet up and relax. We recommend trading your luxurious, stiff, hard topped coffee table for something that is comfortable and upholstered.  

Adding Soft lighting with LED candles is a must, to make your home both elegant and cozy. We recommend using remote controlled LED lighting because removing a tall glass cloche every time you want to turn on the candles, is gambling with fire.

Barn Doors are a beautiful edition to any doorway, it’s mainly a matter if it will fit in your space. Start off your search by measuring your wall space and doorway to ensure you’ll have enough space for the barn door track. Amazon is a great place to purchase inexpensive door hardware tracks. You can either use a single door or fabricate a pair of doors into a barn door, it’s only a matter of properly securing them and attaching them together. We often use barn doors that are taller than the entry way to create the illusion of taller ceilings.

​Decide what style of barn door would work well with the aesthetics of your home. Single hung doors can be purchased from consignment stops and antique shops to make a one-of-a-kind piece.

Sophisticated contemporary is a crossbreed between glamourous style and contemporary flair. It’s the art of blending something old with something new and current.  We combined chrome bookcases with faux cow skull sculptures. The cowhide herringbone rug ties in the refreshing herringbone tile on the fireplace. The soft sophisticated chairs and side tables create a shabby chic look that seamlessly coordinates with the dark brown contemporary coffee table.

​Playing with the shape and ages of design pieces to create a sophisticated contemporary look can be tricky, but when you properly combine the two, it creates a conjoined look that pleases the eye and taste of two different styles. You have the ability to have your cake and eat it too!

It's easy to say you want to remodel your home. You probably spend hours on Houzz and Pinterest thinking, "Why can't I have that kitchen!?
The truth of the matter is, where do you start and more importantly where do you stop your reno? 

Budget:
Aiming for a moving target isn't fun for you or your builder. What do you
realistically want to spend on your home remodel? It's great to have a number in the back of your head of what your bottom line is. Now that you have that number, realize that every home remodel show on HGTV has taught you that $10,000 can get you everything under the sun. Realistic? Not a chance. There are so many moving factors that go into a reno. Know that your budget and checklist might not lineup and be willing to either A) Increase your budget or B) decrease the amount of work done on your home.
Ideas:
Knowing what you want is half the battle. Websites like Houzz and Pinterest make it extremely easy for you and your designer to communicate via photos on what your overall goal is for your home project. It’s often hard to describe in explicit detail what your dream home looks like. Use online photos and point out what gravitates you towards a style/overall look. Once you’ve picked out your selections stick with them. Your choices on the first go around in making selections is often what you truly want to begin with.
Timeline:
How long are you willing to be inconvenienced while your kitchen and three bathrooms are being renovated? Are you willing to stay at your home during the renovation process? Consider the timeline when you chose to renovate your home. Weighing out the pros and cons of renovating in stages or completely gutting your home all in one jump.  Do you pull off band aids slowly or rip them off quickly to reveal your newly remodeled home? 

At this point time of the year everyone begins to ask the question, "It's time to take the Holiday decorations out ALREADY?!" Although, in Arizona we're only beginning our slow climb into the high 60's. Sorry to  those suffering from white backyards and something everyone in the Midwest calls, "Snow". 
So how can you keep your home decorated and festive for the holidays without looking like the Hallmark channel threw up all over your home?
Take a look at these steps:

1. I like to separate the sentimental from the sophisticated (Don't feel like you need to put up every Popsicle ornament your 30 year old son made back in grade school). I think small beautiful trinkets or photos of little John are great around the Holiday Season but not all of them. Pick and choose!
2. Less is Always more (Except when it comes to icing the Holiday Cinnamon Rolls) . Unique and Decorative pieces like the Gold Plated "Noel" sign shown in the image above are a perfect example of bringing a simple decorative piece to your mantel without overdoing it. Personalized Stockings are a must to make your mantel complete! 
3. Stick with a Color theme for your tree and go for it! Don't hesitate when you want to decorate your tree, "Poinsettia Red" this year. Take a look at this beautifully decorated red and silver tree our clients did to their new home for Christmas this year (seen in the image below)! This is the perfect example of bringing some fun color to your tree.
